What happens if you wake up late, researchers recently conducted a survey on 433 thousand people in the United Kingdom with this question in mind. After the research, the results they published in the journal Chronobiology are quite astonishing. Studies have shown that waking up late leads to various mental and physical complications. In addition, people who wake up at night are 10 percent more likely to die prematurely than people who get up early in the morning.
Scientists have chosen four types of people for this research. Those who wake up regularly every day, those who sometimes wake up early, those who sometimes sleep late, and those who regularly wake up every night. Participants in these four categories ranged in age from 38 to 73 years.
It can be seen that the average life expectancy of a person who wakes up regularly in the morning is six and a half years longer than that of people who wake up at night.
However, it involves various factors such as age, gender, caste, weight, socioeconomic status, food habits, lifestyle, etc. of the person. After adjusting for all these factors, it can be seen that those who wake up in the morning have the lowest rate of premature death. And for those whose body clocks run irregularly, this risk continues to increase.
90 percent of people who develop the bad habit of waking up at night suffer from various mental disorders. 30 percent are at risk of developing diabetes. Apart from this, the risk of suffering from neurological problems to intestinal diseases increases to a great extent.
According to Malcolm Vaughan, professor of chronobiology at the University of Surrey, the problem of night waking has now become a public health problem that cannot be avoided. He said that more in-depth research is needed to eliminate this problem, i.e. what steps should be taken to adjust the body clock between sunrise and sunset.
Kristen Knutson, assistant professor of the Department of Medicine at Northwestern University, said that long-term stress is the main reason behind bad habits such as eating poorly, not getting enough sleep, not exercising, waking up at night, or taking drugs. He said that as a result of such various irregularities, people’s sleep time is changed.
